Rounding and time formats

The minimum time to log, the 12 or 24 hour clock, and why a short timer can produce no entry at all.

Last updated 25 July 2026

Two settings on the Settings tab decide how finely time is measured and how it is displayed. Minimum time to log sets the granularity of every entry. Time format picks the clock. The first has real consequences; the second is cosmetic.

Minimum time to log

The choices are 5 minutes, 6 minutes, 10 minutes, 12 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes. New companies start on 15 minutes. Five minutes is the finest granularity available and an hour is the coarsest.

It applies in four places:

  • Timers. When a timer stops, its start and its end are each rounded to the nearest multiple of this value. The entry covers whatever is left between them.
  • The calendar and table views. Dragging or picking a time snaps to this step.
  • The week grid in duration-only mode. The up and down arrow keys move the value by exactly this amount.
  • Spreadsheet imports. The minutes in the Start and End columns must be one of the allowed values. At 15 minutes that means 0, 15, 30 and 45, and a row reading 10:07 is rejected with a message listing what is allowed.

A short timer can round away to nothing

Because both ends are rounded independently, a timer shorter than the interval sometimes produces an entry and sometimes produces none. It depends on where it falls, not only on how long it ran.

At 15 minutes, a timer from 10:04 to 10:13 rounds to 10:00 and 10:15, and you get a 15 minute entry from nine minutes of work. A timer from 10:01 to 10:07 rounds to 10:00 and 10:00. There is nothing left between them, so no entry is created and Temponia explains itself with Timesheet entry was not created.

This is not a failed save. The time was never rejected; the interval simply collapsed it. If it happens often, either work in longer stretches or choose a smaller interval. It is also the usual reason a timer stopped in the Jira panel appears to have synced nothing.

Changing the interval applies from the moment you save. Entries recorded under the old setting keep their times and are never re-rounded.

Time format

Two options, each written with its own example:

  • 24-hour (18:00)
  • 12-hour (06:00 PM)

New companies start on 12-hour (06:00 PM).

This is presentation only. It changes how times read on the calendar and in the table view, the begin and end column in timesheet reports, the labels on the Log time between slider, the deadline options on the Reminders tab, and the wording of timer messages such as Timer can't be created before 07:00 AM. It never changes what is stored, and switching it does not touch a single entry.

The other format settings

Three more sit in the same Format settings card and are worth setting at the same time.

  • Number format picks the thousands and decimal separators from 12.345,00, 12,345.00, 12'345.00 and 12 345,00. It also decides whether the week grid in duration-only mode reads 1,5 or 1.5 as an hour and a half.
  • Date format is offered as pattern and example together, for instance DD/MM/YYYY (31/01/2014).
  • Time zone is the one with teeth. It decides which calendar day an entry belongs to, when a duration-only entry is anchored, and when reminders fire. Set it before people start tracking rather than after.

Currency completes the card. It is the currency your rates, budgets and client invoices are expressed in, and is separate from the currency Temponia bills you in.
